For Potential Students in the Class

I look forward to working with you and a challenging, though memorable, semester!

Here are a few things you should keep in mind about the class as you plan your program:

  •  Doing fieldwork–meaning weekly work (approx. 4 hours/week for 8 weeks) with a nonprofit or community-based organization–is a required part of the course. You must do this to successfully complete the course. It also has to be with an organization geared toward work in the Black community. Be prepared for this time commitment. See details about possible placements on this page
  • The course mixes fieldwork with theory in class meetings. Because it is a capstone course for the major, it is demanding. Be prepared for this when you plan your course load, including any work and family/child care commitments you have. Be very realistic about how much you can do in one semester. If you have substantial work or family commitments, strongly consider taking a lower course load in the semester you take this class
  • You are encouraged to reach out to me before the semester starts to discuss potential fieldwork placements
